Manatee Facts

These massive sea creatures grow to 800 pounds and require at least 32 pounds of food per day. As herbivores (vegetarians) the manatees dine on sea lettuce and sea grasses as well as other sea plants. They appear to graze on the sea gardens similar to cattle grazing in a pasture. Perhaps that is why they are also referred to as sea cows. When first observed by Christopher Columbus men, the sailors were convinced that they were seeing the half-fish, half-man creatures of the sea.

Since the manatees are threatened by cold waters during the winter months they search for warmer spots. These locations can be the warm water springs along the Florida shoreline. Electrical power plants send warm water into the inland channels, which are havens for the manatees. They are slow moving mammals swimming approximately 32 kilometers an hour. They really cannot get out of the way of speeding motorboats.

Manatee Protection

The state of Florida is and has been greatly concerned with the welfare of this natural treasure. Laws have been passed to ensure their safety. The Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act lets the state name certain areas as manatee sanctuaries and establish speed limits for boaters. In winter months at the Crystal River refuge boater, swimmers and divers are denied access because the manatees gather there at that time. If anyone is found to have slain or harmed a manatee he/she is subject to a $500 fine.

Manatee World has designed great programs to explain the manatees and their life cycle. It also encourages becoming caretakers of these wonderful sea creatures. Videos and slide presentations along with puppets help explain the manatees.
