 and the J.N. Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge

The J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is located on the island of Sanibel in the Gulf of Mexico. Whether you are staying in Sanibel or in Fort Myers, the wildlife refuge is easy to get to with your Florida car rental. The refuge is part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystems in the United States, making it world-famous for watching migratory bird populations. You too can be part of this great nature preserve and join the many other visitors to contribute. It is one of the most visited wildlife refuges in the United States and it is always changing.

The refuge was created to preserve the natural beauty of Sanibel Island and protect endangered species. It also plays an important role in providing space for migratory birds to feed, nest, and roost. When you visit with your Florida car rental you will see some of the 220 species of birds that call this area home, at least for a little while.

Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling was a political cartoonist who also had a passion for conservation. He was an important person in the fight to protect some of the land on the island. Darling urged President Harry S. Truman to sign an Executive Order to create the refuge in 1945. Today there are 6400 acres of mangrove forest, submerged seagrass beds, cordgrass marshes, and West Indian hardwood hammocks.

Some of the animals you will find here, aside from birds, include eastern indigo snakes, American alligators, American crocodiles, bald eagles, wood storks, peregrine falcons, west Indian manatees, and Atlantic loggerhead turtles.

Information for Visitors

When you visit J.N. "Ding" Darling Wildlife Refuge with your Florida car rental, you will want to make your way to 1 Wildlife Drive on Sanibel Island.

The best time to visit here with your Florida car rental is from December through March when the migrating birds come through. It is also suggested coming around low tide so you can see the birds feeding on the mud flats that are exposed.

Starting at the Education Center, you can learn about the history of the refuge and the wildlife they have there. If you are coming with kids, there is also a special hands-on area for them. It is open daily except for most federal holidays. In the Education Center you will also find the Bookstore. Here you will find many interesting books about the wildlife you may encounter here.

From January through April the Center is open from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and for the rest of the year they are only open until 4:00 p.m. It is easy to get here with your Florida car rental. Take Sanibel Captiva road two miles west of Tarpon Bay Road. Every Friday Wildlife Drive is closed to all Florida Car Rentals & Van Rentals
