developing his solutions and researching ideas. One extremely interesting work
was his research into producing an inexpensive nature source of latex. Since
latex is used to make rubber and rubber became very expensive in the 1920s this
was important. Through his work Edison found that a natural source of latex
could be found in the weed goldenrod. A 3 to 4 foot plant could deliver about 5%
latex but Edison developed a 12-foot plant that would deliver 12% latex. Of
course his friends and colleges Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone who had vested
interests in this process helped with their expertise, ingenuity and money.
